Funeral events for the president and foreign minister of Iran began in northwestern Iran on Tuesday. The country is mourning the loss of two prominent leaders amidst an ongoing investigation into the helicopter crash that killed them. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has declared five days of mourning. The helicopter crash, attributed to a “technical failure,” prompted Iran’s Armed Forces to launch an investigation. Videos showed crowds lining the streets of Tabriz for the funeral procession. The president, a hard-line cleric who oversaw a deadly crackdown on protesters, had been seen as a possible successor to Ayatollah Khamenei. Some Iranians mourned his loss, while others welcomed it. After Tabriz, the bodies will be taken to Qom and Tehran.
