Brazil has banned Elon Musk’s social media platform X, leading to increased interest in smaller rival Bluesky. In just one week, Bluesky attracted two million new users, although some users reported experiencing outages. The ban was ordered by a Brazilian Supreme Court justice, who also imposed fines for those using virtual private networks to access X. Bluesky, Threads, and Mastodon are competing to replace X as the top microblogging platform, but none have emerged as a credible threat yet. X has an estimated 22 million users in Brazil.
