Venezuela’s political opposition and its supporters gathered in cities around the country on Saturday to demand recognition of their candidate’s victory in a presidential vote nearly three weeks ago. The country’s electoral authority has declared President Nicolas Maduro as the winner of his third term, but the opposition claims their candidate has overwhelming support according to voting machine tallies. The disputed vote has led to a political crisis, with thousands of arrests and several deaths. The international community has suggested solutions, but both the ruling party and the opposition have rejected them. Venezuelans in various cities and in diaspora also joined the protests.
